What’s this?
alcopop.org is the personal website of Jon Dowland.
Here you can find a collection of memorabilia from previous lives (High School, University, etc.) which hopefully will be of interest to those people.
There are also selections of code and tools I’ve written that may be of use, mostly for UNIX or Linux based Operating Systems.
Also present are bits and pieces that I keep here for my own sake.
Why “alcopop”?
Both Tom Robinson and Simon Howard are to blame for that.
In ‘98 or ‘99, Tom was running a server on a cable modem in his parent’s house. This evolved into alkali.org, which hosted the websites of a variety of people from the #doomroom IRC channel.
Inspired by this, I set one up at my parent’s house. I was impressed with Tom’s choice of domain, which was essentially meaningless but short and memorable. I didn’t have any good ideas for a name myself. Simon eventually suggested alcopop as a pun on alkali.
What else?
This machine (vercetti) also hosts a number of other websites. Visit vercetti.redmars.org for the list.
